On the Wall
ceramic wall sculptures
pigmented clay, hand-built
2019–present

Colour is where the work begins. Finding and collecting colours is an important part of the practice, and the palettes come from everyday life. Pigments are mixed into the clay so that the colour runs through the material instead of sitting on its surface as decoration. Colour is not added to a finished form. It is part of the clay from the start, and it shapes the structure and composition of each work.

The works are built from slabs of coloured clay, which are shaped, cut, and assembled by hand. The process is intuitive. Each piece takes form through spontaneous movement and touch, and those traces stay visible in the finished work. The composition is found gradually, through small adjustments made along the way, until the piece settles into place. Each work is one point in a longer process of making, and it holds the time, effort, and adjustment that went into it.

Layers give the works their structure. Slabs are built up and joined one to the next, so that different colours come to sit together within a single composition.

The Cut series, initiated in 2019, forms a central part of the ongoing exploration within the coloured clay practice. Through this series and the works that have grown out of it, the process and direction have shifted gradually over the years. The practice moves through changes in composition and material, and continues to develop as ceramic work for the wall.
